FASSISI LEISHMA

The rapid test for detection of leishmaniosis in dogs

For the easy and fast on-site detection of leishmaniosis antibodies in whole blood, serum and plasma of dogs.

Leishmania parasites, causative pathogens of leishmaniasis, are small obligate intracellular protozoan parasites that are transmitted by sand flies or moth flies. Caused by the sting of an infected animal infected blood is taken up and transmitted through a sting at another individual. The incubation period of leishmaniasis lasts from a few weeks to many years. Leishmaniasis is not endemic in northern Europe, in spite of imported animals. The usual geographic range is the Mediterranean, Asia, South America and parts of Africa.

The variety of possible symptoms makes the identification of leishmaniasis very difficult. First of all for example the fraying of the ears are recorded (as if flies have nibbled the ear margins). Often, this results in small tears, mostly with scaling on ears, head, and finally the entire body, accompanied by small, open ulcers (skin wounds). These wounds are often round and heal extremely bad. Led by hair loss these ulcers infect gradually head, hind legs, up to the entire body. The affected animals suffer from lack of appetite, excessive growth of claws, nose bleeding, chronic diarrhea and weight loss. Succeeding are anemia, lameness and in the end renal failure, the most common cause of death of affected dogs.

Many dogs can carry the virus for years and without becoming ill for a long time or even ever. Leishmaniasis is treatable, but not curable. Therefore, an examination of imported animals, animals having lived in affected areas or animals with symptoms is essential.
